In the Harry Potter series, the illustrations, both cover and internal art, convey meaning.
The published editions in GB depict Harry on the cover. Sketches at the beginning of chapters (US) portray significant characters or incidents.

Thomas Taylor, a British illustrator, created the cover design for Rowling's first book.

On the front cover there is a red steam engine bearing a green sign with yellow letters saying that it is the Hogwarts Express. Stars swirl in the black steam. A streamlined modern train sits in the background. Harry stands to the right of the Hogwarts Express beneath an antique sign that says it is platform 9¾.
Harry touches his right hand to his chin. His scar zigzags down his brow. His shirt, jacket and backpack resemble normal school clothes.

On the back cover Dumbledore is a thin, bearded and mustachioed wizard in striped pants and a purple robe. He has just clicked a Put-Outer.

The Scholastic editions were illustrated by Mary Grandpré, and the cover as well.
