  9. Stylistic devices

    J. K. Rowling mixes real locations with fantasy settings. This makes readers wonder if they should look behind a picture in a pub or confidently approach a wall to move into Harry's world. King's Cross is a familiar London landmark that has a barrier between platforms 9 and 10. It serves as a fictional portal to platform 9 3/4 that transports wizards to the Hogwarts Express. The barrier at King's Cross Station which conveys wizards from one world to another symbolizes cultural barriers.
The students are either pure-blood wizards, mudbloods, or squibs, who are wizards that lack magical skills.
The bigotry directed against mudbloods is blatant racism which further divides the student body and foments rifts between friends and peers, muddying allegiances.
An author can describe important events in a story by telling you about them. Sometimes, though, what characters say is just as important, telling us what the speaker is like and often telling us what has happened in the past or what to expect in the future.
Look at the following quote and explain: "I forbid you to ask him, Fred. No, don't dare. As though he needs reminding of that on his first day at school."
